Lion's Mane, Pom Pom, Bear's Head or Monkey head is a "Tooth Fungi". This is because the spore bearing surface is made of toothlike icicles as opposed to gills or pores. It is a mushroom that grows on stumps or logs of primarily hardwood. It can be on living or dead trees and grows from July to October in the Northeastern United States.
This Mushroom has been referred to as "Nature's Nutrient for the Neurons" due to the active compounds (aromatic hericenones) which may be linked to production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). These molecules are small enough to travel through the blood-brain barrier intact. NGF is most researched for its neurological roles in the body but also has been known to have insulinotropic, angiogenic, and antioxidant properties.
Lion's Mane promotes and supports healthy brain function, brain tissue, nerves, and synapses.
Historically it has been used to support normal gastrointestinal function.
