Foundations of Herbal Medicine for Beginners
In this optional class, you will be introduced to the basic types of herbal medicine and learn vocabulary and terms you will hear throughout the weekend.
Making Oxymels and Other Herbal Concoctions
Medicine making: Not all herbs are tasty, but since time immemorial there have been many ways to prepare herbs and herbal blends to make them palatable. Oxymels, (Latin oxymeli meaning “acid and honey”) are easy to create. In this workshop, we will make a few different oxymels to illustrate some varied recipes and some of Lata’s magical methods of medicine making.
Fortifying Your Beauty and Grace With Herbs
“Beauty is the illumination of your soul”
In this class, appropriate for all genders, Aemen will go over using simple herbal preparations for glowing beauty and handsomeness. Herbs for beauty are made into teas and potions that have side benefits of increasing energy, digestion, as well as prevention of disease. She will also go over the topical use of herbs for brilliant skin and healthy hair. This class will guide you in nurturing your own unique loveliness, and help you expand and clarify your own definition of beauty.
Our Changing Bodies: for WOMEN ages 20-105, and the Men Who Love Them
Come together and share in community. You are not alone! And you are not going crazy!
We will discuss the many physical and emotional changes, concerns and pains we share during our ever-evolving, human female experience. You will learn about herbs and strategies to support transitions and relieve symptoms. Most of all, you will get reassurance that everything is ok. This class is appropriate women of all ages, and the people that love them.
Medicinal Mushroom Walk
Let's go on a mushroom walk to learn what fungi are and what they are doing in the environment. We will pick mushrooms and explore their historic value, present day uses, and potentials in the future. Throughout the walk we will focus primarily on medicinal mushrooms properties and preparations as well as their ability to heal the planet.
Foraging Walk and Hands-on Herbal Medicine Making
Paul will lead a walk in which we will identify common edible and medicinal plants and discuss their uses. He will share how these plants have become part of his story, and how students can incorporate them into their daily lives. Students will learn how and when to harvest each species and the ways in which they can be prepared as food or used as medicine. We will be exploring the native and introduced species and we'll harvest some wild foods to take back to the field kitchen and prepare for folks to taste. Feel free to bring a camera and a notebook. You'll also have time to gather medicinal plants that resonate with you and there will be time to work with Cheryl to make either an herbal vinegar or tincture, or both if time permits.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS:
Cheryl Boiko is a community herbalist based in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn and owner of Remedies Herb Shop. She studied The Wise Woman Tradition of Herbal Medicine and her training and experience includes herbal and nutritional consulting, plant identification, herbal medicine making and being on the front lines of her little herbal shop! Cheryl completed an herbal apprenticeship at Flower Power Herbs & Roots and the advanced immersion program at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where she was certified as a Holistic Health Practitioner.
Aemen Bell began her healing journey early, when as a young teen, she did a self supervised 10 day fast and healed the chronic lung condition that 3 doctors had failed to remedy. Since then, she has been taking care of her own body with herbs, diet, and movement. She fell deeper in love with herbs during her extended apprenticeship at Flower Power Herbs and Roots in NYC. What was supposed to be a 1,500 hour certification stretched out to nearly 7,000, as she couldn’t get enough of the wisdom of the herbs and the guidance of her much loved teacher, Lata Kennedy. Since then, she has worked with thousands of people in all health situations to help them make herbs a part of their lives, and heal from chronic and acute situations. Aemen lives on a mountain, and is also a Kundalini yoga instructor, and a mama.
Lata Chettri-Kennedy has been practicing herbalism in the East Village of Manhattan for over two decades. In 1993, she established Flower Power Herbs and Roots, an herbal apothecary, an herbal hub for NYC. Lata works with various schools and community groups, and is also very active in supporting herbal relief work, from street medics at Occupy to partnering with larger efforts wherever needed. Lata has appeared in publications including the New York Times, NY magazine, and on TV shows including ABC, NBC, Fox News, MTV, Lifetime as well as many foreign publications and television.
John Michelotti is the founder and devotee of Catskill Fungi whose mission is to empower people with fungi though educational walks and workshops and mushroom health supplements which he produces from mushrooms foraged and grown on and around his family farm in the Catskill Mountains. John is a Former President of the Mid-Hudson Mycological Association (MHMA). He served on the Mushroom Advisory Panel for Certified Naturally Grown to develop ecological standards in mushroom production. His goal is to educate and inspire people to pair with fungi to improve health, communities, and the environment.
Jo Anne Kelly Richards is a Certified Herbalist and a Certified Holistic Health Coach. She practices and teaches The Wise Woman Tradition of Herbal Medicine. Her four years of herbal medicine training and apprenticeship included field work, plant identification, medicine making, and clinical practice. Jo Anne also completed the Advanced Immersion program for Holistic Health Counselors at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Jo Anne has taught at Brooklyn College, in the NYC Public School System, The New York Open Center, and other venues in New York City. You can find Jo Anne sharing the healing wisdom of our local wild plants, and the nourishing properties of her natural soaps and skin care line, with her customers and students, at Remedies Herb Shop, in Brooklyn, NY, where she is currently the lead herbal medicine teacher.
Paul Tappenden has been gathering wild foods for more than 60 years. He considers himself a devotee of nature, always ready to learn and to share, which he does through his Facebook page, his walks and programs, presentations and videos. Paul moved to Rockland County, NY in 1979. Since that time, he has studied the flora and fauna of the area and made note of all the changes that have occurred during that almost 40 years. As a wild foods diarist, Paul has followed the progression of the “invasive” species that have taken up residence in our area, and has researched their uses as food and medicine. He is always happy to share his knowledge, and to teach others how to make use of the many plants that are here to serve us. He believes that we have much to learn from the ancients, and that this knowledge is essential, despite the technological world in which we live. A background in gourmet food preparation and a knowledge of nutrition, has been a great benefit in Paul’s wild foods culinary ventures, such that he has catered many events, using wild, foraged ingredients. He includes cooking wild foods among his workshops, especially with groups of children. Herbal and folk medicine is a natural extension of the foraging experience, which is an area that Paul has explored first hand, and is always happy to discuss.https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000970994938
